Red Deer Irish; Fia rua
Colour; Rich red coat changing to grey/brown in winter.
Size; Adult males stand 4ft at shoulder, weighing 400lbs plus with females being smaller at 3.5ft, weighing up to 240lbs.
Habitat; Herds in the National Park Kerry, also in Galway, Mayo, Donegal & Wicklow.
Feeding; Red Deer are an all year grazing animal.
Mating; Breeding is in October with fawns born in June.
Life span in the wild; 13 to 16 years, females usually having a longer life span than males.
Lore; The Irish male name Oisín means little deer. In Irish legend “Oisín” was a warrior hero, son of Fionn mac Cumhaill.
